Dr. David Luchins at SFW

Last week, we heard a unique speech from Dr. David Luchins, a long time senior advisor to the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) and Chair of the Political Science Department at Touro College since 1978.

Dr. Luchins - culling from his extensive experience and scholarship - delivered an engaging, wide-ranging and insightful speech “Shifting Sands: What the Turmoil in Egypt Means for the Rest of the World.”

Hachnasat Kalla at Ichlu Reim

Many of our girls spent their free time acting as waitresses and dancers at a wedding for an underprivileged couple who got married last week. The couple’s wedding was sponsored in large part by the Ichlu Reim Soup Kitchen. The couple, each from a poor family in Yerushalayim, could not afford waitresses or a large wedding. They were not able to invite some of their closest friends.

Some of the SFW girls heard about this problem two weeks ago and they stepped in to help! They served and cleared the festive meal and, of course, danced in between for the Kallah! They literally “made” the simcha!

In addition, our students asked the soup kitchen if the couple needed anything special as they begin to build their new home. They collected money and bought the newlyweds a gift that they needed desperately: a small oven!

The SFW girls had a great time making an unforgettable day for newlyweds in Yerushalayim!

The Ichlu Reim Soup Kitchen in Yerushalayim (whose name comes from Shir Hashirim 5:1 means “come eat, dear friends”) provides meals to destitute people and families daily. Click here or here for more information about this wonderful place.

Sherut Leumi Students at SFW - Update

(file photo)
As posted previously, the SFW Beit Midrash has recently begun expanding its population to include Israeli young women who learn (in Hebrew, of course) with our shana aleph students. These new students work in Yerushalayim during the day doing “Sherut Leumi” in a variety of settings such as hospitals and nursing homes.

These Israeli young women - most of them the same age as our shana aleph students - are interested in contributing to and serving our country after high school. The Sherut Leumi program affords them that opportunity. But they are also interested in learning in SFW’s wonderful Beit Midrash setting to learn in and to continue growing. They gain from - and contribute to - our strong “Kol shel Torah” in the Beit Midrash!

Our students learn b’chavruta with their Israeli counterparts during chaburot and night seder! We are working to expand this program even more in the future!

(If you are not familiar with Sherut Leumi, see the Wikipedia entry - in English or in Hebrew - for basic information. You can also read about different National organizations that describe the program in more detail by clicking here, here or here.)

Siyur in the Footsteps of Yirmiyahu

In our latest chapter of our continuing Shiurim v’Siyurim Program, we walked last Wednesday in the footsteps of Yirmiyahu Hanavi. After visiting Har Hazeitim - where we looked upon Har Habayit from a different-than-usual vantage point (looking and davening towards the west) - we stopped at the kevarim of Chagai ,Zechariah, and Malachi . Afterward, we traveled to Anatot, the hometown of Yirmiyahu, and on to the entrance of Nachal Prat (Vadi Kelt). Seeing the same geographic area as that was familiar to Yirmiyahu, enabled us to better understand much of the imagery found in Sefer Yirmiyahu.

Our siyur was led by the newest addition to the SFW staff, Mrs. Shani Taragin. Shani, who is known for her superlative teaching of Tanach, is equally successful in teaching in the “wall-less” classroom of the great outdoors of Eretz Yisrael!

Mr. Sam Kapustin - The Jews of Eretz Yisrael During the Christian and Muslim Periods

We were privileged to hear a speech from renowned educator and historian Sam Kupustin, Jewish Studies Principal of the CHAT School in Toronto. Continuing our trek through Jewish history via our unique Shiurim V’siyurim Program, Mr. Kapustin shared some of his vast knowledge with a shiur entitled “The Jews of Eretz Yisrael During the Christian and Muslim Periods.” Using original sources from the period, along with extensive maps and charts, Mr. Kapustin made this time period come alive for our students and gave us the context and background necessary to continue our siyurim throughout the Land of Israel. .

Guest Shiur: Rabbi Klugerman - Dealing with Adversity on a Personal and Theological Level

We were privileged to hear a moving and very personal sicha from Rabbi Tzvi Klugerman, Principal of the Middle School at the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy in Silver Spring, Maryland (and father of Sarit Klugerman, SFW ’11!)..Rabbi Klugerman spoke about dealing with personal churban. Unfortunately, he and his family are experts in dealing with adversity on a personal and theological level as they lost a child tragically four years ago. Through a unique look at the Gemara and the Midrash, Rabbi Klugerman told his family’s story of tragedy and despair along with some of the ways his family coped with these challenges. We thank him for sharing such inspirational and deeply personal words with us.

Rabbi Shlomo Gemara at SFW

Rabbi Shlomo Gemara, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivot B'nei Akiva in Toronto paid a special visit to SFW. Many of his talmidot are learning at SFW this year but we all became his students when he delivered a powerful shiur on the goals of Jewish education based on the parshat hashavua and the Gemara. He also enlightened us with his novel perspectives on the lives of R' Yochanan and Reish Lakish.

We thank him for joining us and for inspiring us with his words of Torah!
