Dr. Smadar Rosensweig at SFW

Dr. Smadar Rosensweig, Judaic studies professor at Stern College for Women, came to SFW to deliver a moving and meaningful guest sicha entitled “Zachor: Maftir, Haftarah, and Megilah: What Are We Remembering?” With her tremendous breadth of knowledge of Tanach and of history, she delivered a beautiful shiur about Parshat Zachor as the spiritual preparation for Purim. She discussed how Esther was the catalyst in bringing about the spiritual message and outcome of Purim.

Dr. Smadar Rosensweig is a professor of Bible at Stern College for Women at Yeshiva University, as well as a professor of biblical studies at Allegra Franco Sephardic Women’s Teachers College. Previously, she was a professor of Judaic studies and history at Touro College. Dr. Rosensweig received a master’s degree in philosophy and a master’s degree in arts from Columbia University.

Dr. David Luchins at SFW

This week we heard a unique speech from Dr. David Luchins, a long time senior advisor to the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY), Founding Dean of Landers College and Chair of the Political Science Department at Touro College since 1978. 

Dr. Luchins - culling from his extensive experience and scholarship - delivered an engaging, wide-ranging and insightful speech “ISIS: Who They Are, How They Got There and What Can Be Done About Them?”

Rav Aryeh Leibowitz at SFW

On Thursday nights, we are privileged to host Sha'alvim's Rosh Yeshiva, S'gan Rosh Yeshiva or another member of the greater Sha'alvim faculty for a weekly "Sichat Ram'im." 

This week we were privileged to welcome Rav Aryeh Leibowitz, S'gan Menahel and Ra"M at Yeshivat Sha'alvim. Rav Leibowitz discussed various perspectives and lessons from Naaseh V’Nishmah, Bnei Yisrael’s undying enthusiasm for the Torah.

Rav Leibowitz attended Sha'alvim for two years before studying at Yeshiva University. At YU, he was a student of Rabbi Mayer Twersky, and earned semicha ordination from RIETS, a B.A. in Modern Jewish History and Philosophy from Yeshiva College, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Yeshiva's Bernard Revel Graduate School. Following his marriage, Rav Leibowitz moved to Yerushalayim, and continued his learning at Yeshiva Ohalei Torah, under Rav Daniel Belsky. In 2007, he returned to Sha'alvim as a member of the kollel, and in 2011 he was appointed Assistant Dean of the Overseas Program. Rav Leibowitz has written a number of Torah and scholarly articles, and is the author of Hashgacha Pratis: An Exploration of Divine Providence and Free Will (Targum Press, 2009).

Dr. Esther Shkop at SFW

Dr. Esther Shkop visited SFW this week to delivered a riveting sicha about the hidden messages of Tehillim Perek 8. Using rigorous literary analysis and traditional sources, Dr. Shkop uncovered layer after layer in this fascinating mizmor.

Dr. Esther Shkop is Dean of the Blitstein Institute of Hebrew Theological College, and Associate Professor of Bible. She has a Ph.D. in Public Policy Analysis, a Masters in Biblical Studies and a B.A. in English Lit and Philosophy.
