Mesibat Siyum for SFW Class of 5771

Believe it or not, the Mesibat Siyum was held this past Sunday. 

As sad as we are to see the year end, the Mesiba was a celebration! We celebrated our students’ accomplishments, their learning and their progress.

We and the students also used the occasion to express our appreciation for their outstanding teachers.

We looked back at the wonderful year of experiences, achievements, and growth. But we also looked forward to the girls’ continued Torah learning and development. Our sadness in seeing the year end is mitigated by who they are and by the hope and prayer that we continue to stay in touch both individually and as a group!

SFW’s Rabbi Yamin Goldsmith and Yeshivat Sha'alvim’s Rabbi Ari Waxman appeared on New York area’s “JM in the AM” radio show this morning. They talked with host Nachum Segal about the wonderful things going on at Sha’alvim for Women and at Yeshivat Sha’alvim.

Inspiring words of Dr. Michael Elman

Sha'alvim Executive Board Member, Dr. Michael Elman, was a passenger on El Al flight 27 a few weeks ago. That flight, departing from Tel Aviv, was scheduled to land in Newark, NJ a few weeks ago. The flight made an emergency landing back in Israel after discovering a problem with their landing gear.

Sicha from Lt. Colonel (res.) Tzvi Kasspi at SFW

Among other powerful and memorable experiences on Yom Yerushalayim we heard a very special sicha from Lt. Colonel (res.) Tzvi Kasspi about his life from childhood in the Old City through the liberation of the Kotel in 1967. Mr. Kasspi has lived in and worked for Sha’alvim for more than 40 years and has been an integral part of our growth and success!

Rav Dovid Fuchs on Yom Yerushalayim

As part of our festive and introspective Yom Yerushalayim celebrations, we were privileged to hear a sicha from our very own, Rav Dovid Fuchs. Rav Fuchs - a beloved teacher at SFW throughout the year - shared his personal stories and memories of the months leading up to June 1967 and his service in the IDF in the Six-Day War.

His sicha, along with other shiurim, set the tone for the Yom Yerushalayim tefillot and celebrations in which we participated on this most special day.

Mazal Tov to SFW’s Basketball Team!

Mazal Tov to SFW’s Basketball Team for making it to the championship game to be held this Monday night.

For many Monday nights this year, our formidable basketball team has been playing in the Women’s-Only Seminary basketball league sponsored by Stern College for Women. They played against their friends in all of the other seminaries.  

We congratulate them on making it to the championship game this Monday night against Midreshet HaRova!

SFW at Latrun

SFW paid a visit to Latrun, the strategic hilltop near Sha’alvim overlooking the roads to Yerushalayim and the site of fierce battles throughout Jewish history. From the days of Yehoshua (chap. 10) all the way through to 1967, Latrun has been a part of every major battle. Today, Latrun is the IDF’s Armored Corps Memorial Site and Museum.

At Latrun, we had a very memorable time learning about the various eras of Jewish and world history through the eyes of this beautiful and special place. We also heard some of Rabbi Goldsmith’s memories of his time spent served in the IDF’s Armored Corps.
