S.E.M. Torah - Parshat Shlach

Please click here to listen to S.E.M. Torah for this week.

For more S.E.M. Torah, please click here

S.E.M. Torah is a series of brief divrei Torah delivered by various members of the faculty of Sha’alvim for Women. S.E.M. stands (good-humoredly) for "Squeezing Every Minute" and represents an important philosophy at SFW: every minute counts and every minute can be used productively. Torah must be learned deeply and profoundly on the highest levels possible. However, even when you find that you have only a few moments, we believe that opportunities - like listening to this S.E.M. Torah - are always available…. if you know where to look!

Chessed Appreciation Breakfast

On Tuesday, we held a very special “Chessed Appreciation Breakfast” where we discussed, celebrated and honored the great work that the girls have been doing this year thus far in their Chesed opportunities.

Click here for pictures from the breakfast.

Click here for some individual girls' chessed pictures (more to come....)

Click here for pictures SFW's chessed at Sderot's indoor and secure playground area.

Click here for pictures of SFW's chessed with the I.D.F.

We had the privilege to hear from a variety of girls as they shared their beautiful, funny and even sometimes challenging experiences they experienced. We heard from all sorts of chessed places where girls workd such as medical clowning in Jerusalem hospitals, Ezrat Avot, Aleh, Kav L'Chaim etc. etc. We were all inspired by each other!

We would like to thank our faculty advisors Mrs. Mindy Hilewitz and Mrs. Mim Schwedel for arranging this breakfast and, more important, for all of their work all year for the girls and their chessed!

Keep reading below for ONE example, from Eliana Block, of the beautiful talks we heard….

Yom Yerushalayim at SFW - IV

On Yom Yerushalayim (and for a few days before) we were treated to a series of fascinating and informative shiurim and sichot all surrounding the kedusha and significance of our holiest city.

We were treated to a powerful sicha from Lt. Colonel (res.) Tzvi Kasspi about personal recollections growing up in the Old City of Jerusalem, joining the army and fighting for the IDF in 1967 as part of the brigade that secured Latrun. His stories were sometimes painful, especially when he recounted the losses his unit incurred during the fighting. But his narrative was primarily uplifting. For example, describing what it felt like to live in pre-war Jerusalem, was particularly unforgettable. Mr. Kasspi has lived in, worked with and fought for Sha’alvim since 1955. (click here to listen, Hebrew).

An interview that Mr. Kasspi gave to Arutz 7 (in Hebrew) about fighting in Sha'alvim 46 years ago can be found here

Yom Yerushalayim at SFW - III

On Yom Yerushalayim (and for a few days before) we were treated to a series of fascinating and informative shiurim and sichot all surrounding the kedusha and significance of our holiest city.

Rav Moshe Lichtman, noted author (e.g. Eretz Yisrael in the Parsha), translator (e.g. Rav Teictel's Eim Habanim Semeichah) and speaker spoke about the prophecies in Tanach and how - in many ways - are being realized today. Rav Lichtman (father of Shira Lichtman, SFW '11, '12) also discussed what our role is in the unfolding drama, excitement and opportunities of modern-day Yerushalayim. (click here to listen)

Yom Yerushalayim at SFW - II

On Yom Yerushalayim (and for a few days before) we were treated to a series of fascinating and informative shiurim and sichot all surrounding the kedusha and significance of our holiest city.

Rav Assaf Bednarsh, the Ruth Buchbinder Mitzner Chair in Talmud and Jewish Law at YU's Gruss Kollel in Jerusalem (and husband of SFW's Mrs. Leora Bednarsh) delivered a shiur entitled "Yerushalayim: City of Righteousness." The shiur looked at the holy city in Tanach as the capital not only of Israel but of Tzedek, justice and kindness (click here to listen).
